The Rock of Oëtre Sentier de Granite - Sensitive Natural Area in the Orne in Normandy

Difficulty level: Medium

The mountains in the heart of the Suisse Normande
The natural viewpoint of the Rock of Oëtre, famous for its “human profile” overlooks the Gorges de la Rouvre by more than 100 metres. A favourite location for hikers and wilderness enthusiasts, this chaotic and steep site, a remnant of the Armorican Massif, is home to exceptional flora and fauna such as the freshwater pearl mussel, the otter and the reindeer lichen. Nearby, the “Rock of Oëtre Pavilion” and the Maison de la Rivière et du Paysage (River and landscape centre) welcome and inform visitors. The Maison du Paysage opens its doors for a coffee-accompanied introduction.

A smartphone app called “Mystères à la Roche d’Oëtre’’ (download on the playstore or iOS) offers a new way of exploring the history, geology, fauna and flora of the Rock of Oëtre. It includes the stages of the hike along with information and also a game section with many fun activities (videos, 2D animations, audio testimonials, etc.).

Particular difficulties

  • Walking shoes recommended. Due to hunting, the site is out of bounds to the public on Sundays and bank holidays between 1st November and the end of February and 2 to 3 times per year at other times.
