Presentation

The idea might be a bit “twisted”, but it’s well worth seeing!
Come and admire some fifty “spiral” chimneys made from local brick.
Born in 1820 in La Jarcière, and the only child of farmers, Désiré GUILLEMARE was elected mayor from 1852 until 1904. A tireless benefactor, he was the “constructor” of Saint Ouen – nicknamed “Guillemarville”. He had the “Union Bridge” built over the River Iton, and paid by private donations, then a town hall, a school, a cemetery, a post office... He brought the railway to the town, a company of firemen. On the town square, the “Phare Sollerot” is a 14-m column that lit up the town. At the top can be seen the crowning of the Maiden, firemen and a civil marriage. Below are inscribed all the achievements and the names of the subscribers who helped Mr Guillemare create a picturesque village: Saint-Ouen-sur-Iton!
